Hi, I'm Maria. I'm an art director, designer, and visual storyteller.
Saul Bass once said, "Design is thinking made visual." This is my approach to every project, big or small. Telling a story, communicating an idea, solving a problem visually. I gravitate to design with substance: Ideas woven into concepts and thoughtfully executed. I believe that the practice of looking is just as important as the practice of doing. Being curious, asking questions, getting lost in spontaneous thought can lead to wonderful and unexpected answers.
As an Art Director for Candlewick Press and Walker Books, I'm constantly honing this practice. I began my career at HarperCollins and spent more than a decade designing award-winning books for Abrams Books and then for Random House Children's Books. I'm drawn to out-of-the-box thinking, hand-lettered typography, and quirky but lovable characters. I'm a southerner at heart, a New Yorker by choice, a fan of serial commas, strong coffee, and the color red.
